Description

Introduction to RoHS The European Union’s RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2002/95/EC states that: “Member States shall ensure that, from 1 July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).”In addition to household appliances, affected equipment listed in Directive 2002/96/EC includes information technology, telecom, consumer, lighting, electrical tools, leisure, electro-medical (with exceptions), and automatic dispensers (such as ATMs and vending machines). Large-scale industrial equipment, such as automatic-test equipment, and monitoring and control instruments are not affected.Power-One has divided RoHS product compliance into two categories. RoHS-6 complies with the restriction of all of the six listed substances. RoHS-5 compliance is for customers who wish to exercise the lead-solder exemption, as defined in the RoHS directive: “…for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications.”
