Transformers The testing of transformers has evolved over the years to determine electrical, thermal, and mechanical suitability for the system on which they will be applied. The successful operations of transformers are dependent on proper installation, loading, maintenance, proper design and manufacturing. Both primary and secondary transformers are continuously subjected to thermal cycling, voltage, and current stressors and therefore must be closely maintained. The environment in which a transformer is placed also has a direct impact on its maintenance requirements. The following is a list of transformer maintenance tests we at PowerCom Corporation offer. Inspection: The transformer will be cleaned and inspected for any component damage. A visual inspection will be made for signs of overheating, corrosion, structure, proper grounding, loose blocking, deterioration of the insulation and for voltage tracking over insulated surfaces. Operational checks on transformer auxiliary devices will also be performed. Examination and testing for oil and nitrogen leaks will be done. Gauges will be tested for proper operation. Insulation Resistance Test: The insulation resistance test is a direct current evaluation test of the insulation and gives a reliable indication of the presence of moisture, contamination, or breakdown in the insulation. This test also establishes a benchmark for future comparative tests. Turns Ratio Test: To determine the turns ratio we measure the number of turns of the primary winding with respect to the number of turns in the secondary windings. This test can detect shorted turns in the windings or a defective tap changer. The Turns Ratio Test (TTR) will detect and confirm a difference in voltages between phases. This means, that your transformer is not operating up to the manufacturer ’s specifications and is not producing proper output voltages. This is also an early indication of transformer failure. It can also be used for transformer acceptance testing when a new transformer is installed. This will also be a base line for future diagnostics. Insulating Liquid Testing: This test is used to determine if the liquid's dielectric strength has been lowered due to the accumulation of contaminants and moisture. Results from the test can determine the proper treatment of the oil or if replacement is required. Oil Analysis: Since we can not see the internals of the transformer, the oil analysis can determine what is electrically or mechanically failing internally to the transformer. Our laboratory looks at moisture content, dielectric breakdown, DGA (dissolved gas analysis), power factor, interfacial tension, color, and acidity. These results, along with electrically testing can determine the operating conditions of your transformer. Insulating Power Factor Test: The insulating power factor test, better known as the ”Doble Test ”, is a complete overall test of the insulating properties of a transformer. Elements such as carbonization, ionization, moisture, and heat can breakdown the insulation's strength. The Doble test measures the power losses due to leakage current through the insulation.
