Availability of clean, pure electric power has become a necessity that is commonly taken for granted in the developed world. At the same time, over one-third of the world’s population is without power, and demand for electricity is greater than the available supply. To meet the demand for power in the underdeveloped world, 100 million people would have to be connected to power each year for the next 20 years. In fact, demand increases annually by 70 million kilowatt hours, while proportionate supply decreases.Environmental pressures are responsible for closing nuclear, hydro, and carbon-based power generation facilities; and new facilities cannot be constructed rapidly enough. Even in the United States, it is estimated that in the next 20 years power demand will increase by 33% more than the supply.Due to overburdening of available utility power, power quality and availability are greatly compromised. At the same time, today’s sensitive electronic equipment (from security systems to computers) is dependent on power and requires clean, consistent power to function properly and protect critical data and operations.
