Powerain Systems, Inc. was founded in late 1991 by a group made up of people who sold, installed and operated automatic car wash sites, mostly in the petroleum or 'C-store' setting. The conception of the product was driven by a lack of reliability and performance from equipment that was available from other manufacturers at that time. The company aimed to offer a product that was reliable, serviceable, easy to install, and most importantly profitable to operate. The reliability and ease of service related to careful design and component selection. The ability to generate profit meant that designers focus on creative product offerings and the ability to wash vehicles faster, not just better.The company is credited with many product innovations, including mounting the high-pressure pumping station on-board for operators without equipment rooms, the use of a drop bar to better cover the front and rear of the vehicle, and the use of programmable computers to allow more creativity in menu selections for the operator. Powerain also focused on providing products that allowed the operator a level of self-reliance. There are many, many things on an automatic car wash that can wear out or break. One objective of the company was to make it easy for an operator to handle routine repairs without having to wait for and then pay technicians. In fact, 75% or more of the components used in manufacturing a Powerain are available on the open market. Of the few truly proprietary components, most are not ‘wear’ items and rarely require attention.As Powerain's 15th anniversary approached, the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa developed an interest in the company as a means to expand their entrepreneurial business base. In the summer of 2005 the Bois Forte Band reached an agreement to assume majority ownership of the company.
