Description

The difference at PLC is connecting with kids and nature. From gardening, tree planting and grounds-keeping, to helping our farmers and ranchers; from hiking, camping and fishing to observing the native plants and animals, students and staff share in a bond with the earth. This "grounding effect" provides a stable, healthy foundation, tying together all aspects of the program and ensuring a better opportunity for success in life after graduation from the Center. Staff and students interact in a constructive process through role-modeling, boundary setting and assertive communication. The goal is to bring about a change in the youth's behavior and lifestyle such that he will no longer be in chronic conflict with himself or others. By a system of structuring, each youth will be taught to use time constructively during his stay at the Center. Regular programming includes classes in the morning and early afternoon, work crews in late afternoon and activities in the evening. The purpose of the level system is to provide a method of personal achievement, whereby the youth may progress through the program. During this progression the youth earns privileges by learning to follow rules which are reinforced by earning score points. These score points become very important as a certain point score is needed to advance to the next level. With each advancement within the level system the youth gains a sense of achievement and self-worth. Our medical staff handles routine medical problems. Medical services can also be accessed in the communities of Elgin and Bismarck. Psychological/psychiatric services are utilized at St. Alexius Medical Center, MedCenter One, and West Central Human Service Center, Bismarck, ND.
