The USPS defines a few different methods of printing Postnet barcodes. The 5 digit Postnet barcode consists of a <start character>, 5 digit ZIP code, <check digit>, and <stop character>. The ZIP plus 4 Postnet barcode consists of a <start character>, 9 digit ZIP code, <check digit>, and <stop character>. The most popular Postnet barcode in use today is the DPBC Postnet barcode which consists of a <start character>, 9 digit ZIP code, two digit DPBC number, <check digit>, and <stop character>. The two DPBC numbers are usually the last two digits of the street address or PO Box number.

The European Article Numbering System (EAN) barcodes are a superset of the UPC barcodes. EAN-13 consists of 13 numbers where EAN-8 consists of 8 digits for smaller packages. To obtain a company prefix for EAN barcodes you will need to contact EAN at http://www.ean-int.org/ .
