Description

Dear Readers, Any presenter looking to take his or her design skills to the next level would do well to consider the "three word" bullet-point challenge offered up by contributing writer Rick Altman in this month's issue. Altman, host of the Presentation Summit conference (formerly PowerPoint Live)set for next month in San Diego, pondered this question in creating the challenge: What if a law were passed prohibiting bullet points from exceeding three words in length? While not always achievable, the exercise itself could be balm for what ails many PowerPoint-based presentations, he believed. Tackling the challenge has multiple benefits. It usually results in slides that are easier on the audience's eyes, that create a greater sense of intrigue (since they offer only a tease of key points), that help speakers learn their material better (and avoid appearing lazy) by avoiding excess slide verbiage and that improve presentation pace. Altman had in mind one of his favorite quotes about presenting, from Mark Twain, when he conjured the three-word challenge: “If you want me to speak for an hour, I am ready today. If you want me to speak for just a few minutes, it will take me a few weeks to prepare.”
