(LOCKPORT, La.) — Bollinger Shipyards announces that Chris Remont has joined the company as director of program management. Remont will oversee all aspects of program management for Bollinger Shipyard’s Lockport new construction facility, with an emphasis on the present U.S. Coast Guard fast response cutter program. The announcement was made by Ben Bordelon, Bollinger executive vice president and chief operating officer, who said, "Mr. Remont’s extensive background and experience in engineering, planning and production, and his proven ability to successfully perform in all aspects of shipbuilding and repair makes him a great addition to our team." Prior to joining Bollinger, Remont held the position of director, engineering, central planning and production control of Avondale Engineering and Construction, a subsidiary of Huntington Ingalls Industries. He previously held the position of director of electrical engineering, Ingalls Shipbuilding, and has more than 22 years of experience in the U.S. in commercial manufacturing, including shipbuilding.

(JEANERETTE, La.) — Louisiana-based boat manufacturer Metal Shark Aluminum Boats has hired marine industry veteran Carl Wegener as its director of commercial sales. Wegener brings a diversified background in engineering, strategic planning, and business development, with over 25 years of experience in the boat and shipbuilding industry. At Metal Shark, he will utilize this background and his extensive list of industry contacts to develop the company’s relationships with operators in the passenger ferry, fast crew, utility, entertainment, and pilot boat markets. Earlier this year, Metal Shark announced significant growth plans, including the acquisition of a 25-acre shipyard in Franklin, La., and a commitment to expand its focus to include commercial interests in the shipbuilding sector. According to company executives, the hiring of Wegener is an integral component of these plans. “I have known Carl for many years and have always been impressed by his encyclopedic knowledge of the commercial shipbuilding sector,” explained Chris Allard, president of Metal Shark. “He knows all the players and he fully understands the challenges and opportunities.

The Seattle marine industry lost one of its pre-eminent mechanical engineers with the passing of Mike Markey on March 2. Mike was the third generation president of Seattle-based Markey Machinery Co., the 106-year-old heavy marine deck equipment manufacturer, where he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Charles Markey, and his father, William “Bill” Markey, before retiring in 2002. Mike was born in Seattle and graduated from West Seattle High School. Afterward, he received his engineering degree from Stanford University and went on to work for the steam division of General Electric as a sales engineer in Boston. In 1958, Mike joined the family business as a drafter and later chief engineer. Though Mike had a hand in many of the products of Markey Machinery, he especially cultivated the oceanographic research winch business with UNOLS and NSF where many of the winch standards used today were developed. Paying close attention to the needs of the ship’s crew and the scientists, Mike evolved the design of oceanographic winches from modified utility winches to specialized, precision winches dedicated to the rigors of deep ocean casts.
