Identifying the population that is affected with celiac disease, a genetic autoimmune condition triggered by eating gluten, will decrease our healthcare costs exponentially. In 2004, the National Institute of Health convened a panel of international gastroenterologists specializing in celiac disease, celiac advocates and others to discuss the value of instituting a mass screening for celiac disease in the United States. Also discussed was a nationwide education program for healthcare providers to increase awareness of a disease that has been neglected for over 60 years. Neither of these events occurred. No one was tested and the healthcare education campaign was not initiated. Of course, one of the consequences of these decisions is that people continue to suffer for years with misdiagnoses and die unnecessarily.

There is now a dedicated gluten free brewery out of Portland Oregon! Harvester Brewing is a dedicated gluten-free craft brewery founded in 2011. Harvester Brewing’s facility is entirely gluten-free, no gluten is allowed on the premises.
