We were instantly struck by the beauty and magnificence of the huge pine tree standing in solitude in the meadows of our new Maine home site. The cool winds of the Bay flowed through its branches with an ethereal murmur, almost as if the tree was talking to us. We stood rooted in silence, as though we had somehow been compelled to do so. To this day, Joan still cannot explain why she unexpectedly experienced an intense desire to write a story about this tree that dominated the meadows. As if with one voice, we said, “Why not name it Mr. Pine? ” With these words, the spell was suddenly broken and we stood in wonderment. Later on, one of the most beautiful sights we ever witnessed was the sun ’s breathtaking radiance on its downward path. It reminded Joan of one of her favorite authors, Leo Tolstoy, whose estate was named Yashna Polyana, (Radiant Meadows.) There simply could be no thought of any other name for our new home, Radiant Meadows, and it would then seem fitting to name our story, MR. PINE AND HIS RADIANT MEADOWS FAMILY We wished MR. PINE AND HIS RADIANT MEADOWS FAMILY to provide true to life tales of parental and family quality life and love. We also wanted our story to concentrate on traditionally old-fashioned customs, manners, honor, and integrity. We insisted that Mr. Pine comport himself in a rather formal and dignified manner and never stray from his standing as a leader and father figure to his family. He would be steadfast in his principles and in his determination never to break his lifetime pledge not to falsify. His commanding, gentle, and always-correct presence would inspire all of his Family to revere him and wish to be with him. It has been said that MR. PINE AND HIS RADIANT MEADOWS FAMILY has religious overtones. We could not agree more. The basic tenet of religion, humanity, and civilization is a powerful belief in family and parental love, and honor and integrity, for they are all as one. Few, to this day, realize that the absence of contractions was part of the design to mold Mr. Pine ’s character. Even fewer are aware that most of the names are, by intent, taken from Tolstoy and Shakespeare, Joan ’s favorites. We have been fortunate to observe the characteristic manners and behavior of creatures surrounding us, and have come to understand that we, as humans, are part of the same creation and natural order that they are. For us to consider them inferior would be a contradiction and misunderstanding of how similar we are in all aspects of being. Their griefs and hurts and are no less painful than ours, but life for them is more intense, for they are surrounded by danger and violence. We like Albert Schweitzer ’s saying, “If a man loses reverence for any part of life, he will lose reverence for all life. ” Most humbling to us is that a tiny flax seed reportedly can live from 5,000 to 9,000 years, a feat that we humans to this day can only dream of. We have experienced a negative influence from those who are critical of Mr. Pine ’s values and way of life We were mindful of them and realized that Mr. Pine would not be for everyone. Still, to deviate from our original concept would have been a betrayal of Mr.
