Description
James E. Rainey Jr. joined the Randolph community in the summer of 2014, to serve as the ninth Head of School in Randolph’s 55-year history. Rainey’s appointment was the culmination of a nationwide search in which he emerged as the candidate with the values and experience to guide the School in the next phase of its growth and development as an excellent independent school. “When we heard Jay eloquently describe his philosophy for 21st century education, we realized that we had our man,” said Board Chair and member of the Search Committee Matt Fowler ’83. A highly principled educational leader with great vision and a keen intellect, Rainey is known for his ability to forge deep and meaningful connections with students, faculty, parents and school leaders, as well as with the broader community. Rainey joined Randolph from Norfolk Academy, in Virginia, where he had served since 2002 and was most recently the Assistant Head for Academic Affairs. Rainey holds degrees from Princeton University (A.B., Religion) and the College of William and Mary (M.A., American Studies).

Randolph was founded in 1959, a time of rapid growth for Huntsville as the city was transplanting its economic roots from cotton production to U.S. missile defense, rockets and space age technology. The School was founded by a group of 20 concerned citizens who organized a founding society to start a private school. Randolph began its mission with a handful of elementary classes in an antebellum home on the street from which it takes its name. Dr. Wernher von Braun was among the numerous scientists and engineers who sent their children to Randolph. Within a few years, the School relocated to a spacious 16-acre campus on Drake Avenue. The School’s rigorous college preparatory curriculum and successful alumni rapidly became the pride of the Huntsville business community.
Founded in 1906, this national organization, which comprises about 300 public and private member schools, is the secondary school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa. Schools must apply for membership. Randolph was granted a chapter in 2002.
