Harvest Hotline — Larson Grain Company grain division manager Jason Parenteau thinks the soybeans will average around 40 bushels per acre in the LaMoure, North Dakota area. “There were some fields that were closer to 50, but we’re also riding into the stuff with some drowned out areas that maybe averaged in that 33-34 range.” Parenteau says the corn that’s starting to come in looks very good. “It’s just starting, and it’s ranged anywhere from 14.5 to about 21 (percent) moisture and for the most part, it’s right around 56 pounds, so it’s just beautiful corn." Due to the excellent weather, Morris, Manitoba farmer Art Enns says harvest is nearly done in his region. “There might be the odd bit of late soybean fields still out there and the odd corn field that is out here, but I’d say that harvest is pretty well wrapped up, generally speaking.” Enns says yields were all over the board. Asgrow/Dekalb co-sponsors the Harvest Hotline broadcast on the Red River Farm Network. Crop Comes Off Very Dry — The soybean harvest is nearly done for Fred Lukens near Aneta, North Dakota. Lukens grows seed beans and says the crop came off very dry. “Some of them, we are harvesting at nine percent, which is lower than you’d like for seed beans. They want them up close to 14 percent because the more they handle them, the less cracking and so on they’ll have, but there’s really nothing you can do about it. I think this, overall, might be one of our best soybean crops ever, if not the best. Despite On-and-Off Again Harvest, Good Progress Made on Beets — Minn-Dak Farmers Co-op Vice President of Agriculture Tom Knudsen says a few growers are finishing the sugarbeet harvest. "We had a pretty extensive open haul in August and September and some guys were able to take advantage of it. On the other hand, we’ve got some guys that are between a third and a half done, that’s normal.” Sugar content has been in the 17 percent range with yields in the high 20's. ND Cattle Airlifted to Kazakhstan — In generations past, North Dakota cattle would be loaded on rail cars and sent to South St. Paul or Chicago. This past week, North Dakota bred heifers were delivered to Kazakhstan on a 747 jet. "This is the first shipment out of North Dakota and I think when this contract is fulfilled, there will be more to come," said North Dakota Commerce Commissioner Shane Goettle. Goettle was at the Fargo Jet Center when 162 head of cattle were loaded onto the plane Tuesday. Large wooden crates housed four to five heifers each. “I went up to see how comfortable they were. In fact, they’ve got a lot of leg room and they’re stretching out. They’re more comfortable that you and I are on a regular consumer flight. They were pretty calm today. I think they’re more comfortable in this 747 than they would be on a semi.
