For me, life started in Manhattan. And after that, there is a fairly short list of towns: In Thousand Oaks I am, as the crow flies, 7.7 nautical miles from the surf at Trancas Beach. This is as far as I have lived from salt water in my life. My uncle was a sailor, and he taught me how to sail. Going up the family tree a great-great uncle was a ship-builder.
