We are a privately held division of Electronic Systems Protection, Inc. which develops and manufactures products at its headquarters in Zebulon, North Carolina.

The company was founded in 1961 by Raymond Cooke MBE (1925–1995) and was initially headquartered in a Nissan Hut on the premises of Kent Engineering & Foundry (from where the name KEF is derived) – a metal-working company on the banks of the River Medway, near Maidstone in Kent, Cooke, an ex-BBC Electrical Engineer, was keen to experiment with new materials and technologies in order to create products with superior acoustic quality that could reproduce recordings as natural as the original performance. From the very beginning, the pioneering inventiveness of KEF loudspeakers was undeniable and now for several decades, audiophiles around the world have revered KEF for its innovative, high-performance loudspeakers.

We believe in minimizing our company’s and our product’s impact on the environment. We are committed to reducing our energy usage, even while increasing our productivity; recycling materials; and working with our manufacturing facilities worldwide to take a green focus in all phases of operation. Wherever applicable, we strive to ensure that sustainable practices are in place.

AKG, founded in Vienna in 1947 by Dr. Rudolf Goerike and Ernst Pless, soon became one of the biggest players in the world of sound. Today AKG is synonymous with "good" seems Kind of a weak descriptor; use "superior" sound, representing passion in music by providing the highest quality and ongoing innovation. Within months of the company's establishment, the first AKG microphones were already being used in radio stations, theatres and jazz clubs. The products (the AKG DYN Series) were at that time manufactured by hand by five workers.

BDI’s passion has always been for great design, but we have never lost site of the impression that our company will leave on our global community. We’ve always tried to offer products that are worthy of their cost... not only in terms of what our customers pay but also in terms of whether the resources to create that product can be justified. Designing products that are built to last, we have never chased fads to develop products that would be here today and gone tomorrow.
