Reuning & Son Violins was founded in Ithaca, New York in the 1970's by a young Christopher Reuning and his parents and operated for 20 years serving New York's finest musicians. The shop was relocated to Boston in August of 1994. Since then, Reuning & Son Violins has established itself as New England's premier source for fine stringed instruments. This reputation we have established is due to our congenial staff that have exacting professional standards, a profound scholarly interest in stringed instruments, and a keen understanding of the needs of serious musicians. Reuning & Son Violins had its origins in Ithaca, New York in the early 1970's. Sanford and Joan Reuning (Chris' parents), who were amongst the first Suzuki violin teachers in the United States, were frustrated with the lack of availability of fine quality small violins for their students. This frustration led them to searching for small violins in numerous violin shops and eventually to a very small business in which they sold fine small sized instruments to their colleagues who were similarly appreciative of the quality that a fine instrument provided for their students. As Christopher was training as a violin maker, the business expanded to include fine full sized instruments and their bows. In 1984, Christopher purchased the business from his parents and moved it into separate quarters in downtown Ithaca. As the business grew, Chris realized that the company needed to be located in a city with a larger musical community and where the business could be more accessible to their clientele. The move to our present location in Boston occurred in 1994 and it has proven to be a fruitful decision. Reuning & Son Violins is now considered one of the world's leading violin shops, where we deal in fine instruments to serious artists and deserving students.
