Rhode Island College, the first of the three public institutions of higher education in Rhode Island, was founded in 1854 as the Rhode Island Normal School on Benefit Street in Providence. The college's goal was to provide teacher preparation to qualified high school graduates in Rhode Island. In 1898 a new building adjacent to the State House was dedicated and in 1920 the name was changed to the Rhode Island College of Education. During the 1958-59 academic year, the college moved to its current location, a 180-acre park-like campus in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence.

The main goal and purpose of the Campus Police Department, located on the Ground Level of Browne Hall, is to provide service and protection to The Rhode Island College campus, properties, staff, faculty, visitors, and students.

The Records Office is responsible for the registration process, recording student academic progress, scheduling courses, scheduling the use of facilities, preparing degree evaluations and certifying graduation, providing transcript services, and certifying student attendance at agencies outside of the College.

Working with Student Services, Residential Life, Physical Plant and others in our on-campus community, we are an integrated team striving to achieve excellence in police protection and to ensure a high quality of student-faculty life by promoting a tranquil, safe atmosphere conducive to the objectives of the College. The department is dedicated to the protection of the College properties to ensure the beauty, security, and safe function of the campus grounds and resources.
