Description

News Release September 23, 2010 Brown University Chooses Rhody Fresh As Its Sole Milk Supplier. With a commitment to buying local foods and supporting sustainable agriculture, Brown’s choice helps Rhode Island dairy farmers. Brown University Dining Services recently chose Rhody Fresh brand milk for all of its on-campus food service operations. The choice of supplier supports the nine member farms of the Rhode Island Dairy Farms Cooperative, which produces the Rhody Fresh brand. Brown Dining Services previously had bought its milk from a number of suppliers, but chose Rhody Fresh exclusively as part of its Community Harvest program, which began in September 2002 as a way to support small farms that employ sustainable practices. While there are other dairy suppliers in the Greater Rhode Island area, Brown Dining Services chose Rhody Fresh for reasons that include supporting local farmers, sustainable purchasing practices and great quality milk. Associate Director of Brown Dining Services Peter Rossi said, “Rhody Fresh has been part of our program since the early days of the brand. As an expanded partnership would further support Rhode Island dairy farms, as well as our efforts to purchase locally produced and sustainable products, we decided that this step simply made sense.” Brown Dining Services supports Rhode Island-area food producers in order to strengthen the local food system, and also chooses farms from across the region and nation. In addition to providing a large-scale, steady market for small farms, Brown also conducts educational programs and special events centered on developing local food operations. Brown Dining Services sustainable program is part of a broad commitment to socially and environmentally sustainable purchasing practices. Rossi added, “Our purchasing commitment helps create economic stability for Rhode Island farmers, and of course, provides our students with great tasting, nutritious foods.” Editorial contact: Andrew Webb T: 401-539-8300 F: 401-539-8302 awebb@andrewwebb.com
