Design-Build In ancient times master builders were employed to both design and build the great lasting structures that in some cases still remain standing today. In the recent past there was a movement away from this integrated approach. In many cases today, architects design the building and plans are drawn well before a builder is ever selected to implement the vision. Design-build is a return to the master-builder concept where the builder assumes responsibility for designing and ultimately bringing the project to completion. The advantage of the design-build process is that the owner has a single point of contact for the entire process; a team approach is used throughout the process which results in improved communication among all of the parties involved; construction costs are known at earlier stages of the process and can be more effectively controlled; and the process from design to completion are generally shorter.
