PAUL W. ALLEN Trombone Paul W. Allen began study on the trombone in the 4th grade, at a small country school in the central California Valley. Since those early years he has learned to play the guitar, Baroque recorder, all manner of band instruments, and the English handbell. He is an accomplished conductor of both choral and instrumental groups. He began teaching music at James Rutter Middle School in the Elk Grove Unified School district in 1984, and after 20 years moved to teaching English and then to Computer Programming at the same location. He founded RiverBells, a professional, community handbell ensemble centered in the south Sacramento area in 1998. He received his Masters of Music in Composition from California State University, Sacramento in 1999. He has been playing trombone with the Sacramento Symphonic Winds since its inception five years ago, and became a member of the RSP resident orchestra in 2010. He has played in pit orchestras with the El Camino High School band and the River City orchestra. He enjoys pit work because of the high level of talent and focus in groups such as this. JEANNA ARNOLD Clarinet and Saxophones Jeanna learned to play saxophone in 7th grade. She was a music major through high school and community college where she received occupational certificates in Commercial Music and Music Copying. After high school, Jeanna was part of the United States Collegiate Winds Band that toured Europe. In college, she was part of the Olympic Marching Band (a 1000 piece band!) that performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in L.A. She moved to Sacramento in 1986 and music went on a 20 year hiatus. In 2006, Jeanna answered an ad from a gentleman looking for musicians to recreate his nine piece swing/dance band (from the 1940's!). This also required her to learn the clarinet. Since then, she has joined the Capitol Pops Concert Band and now feels honored to be a part of the wonderful RSP Orchestra. VERNA BROCK Cello and Bass Verna started her musical endeavors at the age of seven, when she first began piano lessons, and has been playing music ever since. In high school Verna played cello, flute, oboe, and bassoon in band and orchestra, as well as cello in the Sacramento Youth Symphony. Although Verna majored in chemistry at Sacramento State, she kept up her music skills and completed a minor in music. After college, Verna focused on songwriting and playing guitar, keyboards, and bass in local bands. Verna's work with Holiday Flyer, Rocketship, and California Oranges has been released on independent record labels in the US, Japan, and Europe. Verna was awarded a Critic's Choice Sammie for string instruments in 1996, and California Oranges won the Critic's Choice Sammie for Best New Band in 2002. Verna's first show with RSP was All Shook Up in 2008, and she is thrilled to be a part of the RSP family. KATHRYN CANAN Flute and Piccolo Kathryn has enjoyed playing for musical theater since a gig in the Kit Kat Orchestra for Cabaret got her out of marching for high school football games in November in Montana.
