Description

Runkel Title & Abstract has been serving the Wausau community and beyond since 1927. Beginning first with Edward C. Kretlow, the Register of Deeds for Marathon County between 1891 to 1904, Marathon County Abstract Company was founded by Kretlow in 1890 and incorporated in 1905. Historians speculate Marathon County Abstract was formerly located within Marathon County Bank’s previous location. In 1927, George A. Runkel purchased Kretlow’s business and renamed as Runkel Abstract & Title Company.Runkel twice served as the Register of Deeds for Marathon County, first between the years of 1917 – 1918 and again from 1921 – 1932. During his tenure, the firm was operated by Lee W. Allard and Floyd R. Runkel, George’s son, until 1966 when Mr. Allard retired. At that time William F. Abraham and Constance Hoenisch purchased Mr. Allard’s interest, entering into partnership with Floyd where they successfully operated the business until 1971 when their interests were acquired by Mr. Abraham. The current management took over upon Mr. Abraham’s retirement in 1984.Originally, Runkel was located on the 2nd floor of the Mayer Lotz Building on 3rd Street in Wausau. When additional space was needed, Runkel moved to the 3rd floor where they remained until 1976 when Mr. Abraham purchased the building at 522 Scott Street, Wausau, formerly occupied by the Bliese Grocery Store. After a 1987 fire in the adjoining Colby house, the present owners purchased the property and expanded the building to its current size. (How many employees currently work for Runkel?)
