Description
Pathologists Overseas is a nonprofit organization that has been coordinating the efforts of volunteer pathologists and technologists for over 20 years to improve and provide affordable pathology services to underserved patients worldwide. This is accomplished by aiding and establishing pathology laboratories, providing diagnostic pathology services and training local physicians as pathologists. Projects were completed or are currently active in Kenya, Eritrea, Madagascar, Ghana, Nepal, Bhutan, Peru, El Salvador, and St Lucia. The main challenge is finding enough volunteers to provide uninterrupted service to a project. Two APMG pathologists have worked with Pathologists Oversees. Dr. Keith England, emeritus member, was Laboratory Director at Kijabe Medical Center in Kenya.
Quality assurance was brought into focus in the 1980s when American manufacturers realized the quality gap between their products and those of Japanese producers. Prior to this, quality assurance was primarily the domain of industries with the potential for major disasters, such as aviation. By many measures, the health care industry as a whole has only recently begun to adopt the concepts of quality improvement and deal effectively with medical error. This is highlighted in the Institute of Medicine report on medical error, which has stimulated greater focus on quality improvement, error reduction, and patient safety. The clinical laboratory, with its focus on accuracy and precision of analytic procedures, developed and implemented quality control measures earlier than anatomic pathology. Many of the patient safety measures and process improvements have focused on the clinical laboratory. But APMG believes anatomic pathology is just as important and deserves equal attention. The typical anatomic pathology activities of clinical correlation, interpretation, and differential diagnosis are all examined using the tenets of traditional quality control testing.
Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group has focused for over 25 years on providing leading pathologists, medical directors and pathology consultants to community hospitals and their medical staffs.
On November 1st, 2013, Dr. Michael Legmann, member of APMG for over 7 years, was appointed Medical Director of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. He will serve this role in addition to his service as a pathologist at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. Dr, Legmann’s achievements represent APMG’s commitment to pathology beyond diagnostic services, which includes further assistance provided to clinicians with medical education, quality assurance and process improvement, thereby facilitating and optimizing patient management.
