For more than a year, Safe Systems has been working with its clients to help them get their banks’ and credit unions’ computers off of Windows XP and on to one of Microsoft’s newer operating systems, Windows 7 or Windows 8. Congratulations to the Safe Systems clients who in the last 16 months have replaced or updated 7,232 machines before Microsoft’s April 8 deadline.

That in mind, now might be a good time to revisit your policies. Highlight every instance a “will” or “shall” is mentioned, and how often it says you’ll do something, and with what group. If it’s something you don’t need to do, take it out of your polices. If you should be doing it and can’t prove you are, implement processes to document your practices. For many aspects of IT, such as patch management, data backups and security monitoring, this is an area where automated systems can provide the documentation needed to show an examiner your practices align with your policies.

Later this year we will host our fifth annual client conference, NetConnect. It will be held on September 23-25 at the beautiful Chattanoogan Hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This conference is an excellent opportunity to network with industry peers, and to hear updated information on the topics of compliance and technology. Our special keynote speaker for this event will be football legend, Bill Curry, a former player and coach. Having heard him speak several times, I can tell you we are in for a treat.
