SITUATION Dow Chemical Canada, Inc. has a 2,128 acre manufacturing site at Fort Saskatchewan that uses natural gas and salt to produce basic chemicals and plastics. In 1961 the facility began manufacturing products for the agricultural, oil, gas, transportation, and pulp and paper industries. Dow established the site in Fort Saskatchewan because the location offered a plentiful supply of low-cost natural resources needed to make these products.

The company pioneered the concept of real-time emergency response in 1981. Since 1981, our solutions are being used by 17 of the top 20 Forbes chemical companies, all of the North American Class 1 Railroads, and have gained wide acceptance with both domestic and international government response organizations.

SITUATION NOVA Chemicals is a worldwide plastics and chemicals manufacturer. NOVA's Corunna site is one of the most flexible petrochemical facilities in the world. This facility has the resources to switch between natural gas liquids and crude oil or crude oil derivatives to produce a full range of primary petrochemicals for use by NOVA Chemicals' operations and for sale to customers. The Corunna site demonstrates clearly the proactive use and implementation of a SAFER Real-Time ® solution.
