Sangart was founded in 1998 by Robert M. Winslow to develop and commercialize products and technologies related to targeted delivery of oxygen to tissue. Its lead product, Hemospan, is the result of more than 15 years of peer-reviewed research, which led to breakthrough discoveries of how hemoglobin, the natural oxygen carrier inred blood cells, functions in a cell-free environment.It is well known that blood transfusion has the potential to transmit infectious disease. In addition, increasing restrictions are being placed on blood donors, which reduce the ability of blood banks to meet demands. In response to these factors, cell savers, plasma expanders, hemodilution and new surgical techniques can reduce the amount of blood transfused into surgical and trauma patients.
