Recent Study Concludes Glucosamine not helpful for Arthritis Pain in the Lower Back... A week doesn’t go by without me recommending Glucosamine Sulfate to someone. I’ve devoted countless Newsletter articles to Glucosamine, and it’s amazing ability to help patients with arthritis in the knees or hands. A recent study (done by a Chiropractor!) however, concluded that Glucosamine is no better than placebo for lower back “arthritis”. Am I disappointed? Absolutely! Am I surprised?...certainly not. In 15 years of practice, I have yet to have a patient tell me they thought taking Glucosamine helped to alleviate their back pain. I can only speculate that the primary reason Glucosamine isn’t effective, is the source of lower back pain is likely to be something other than “arthritis”. i.e: muscle, tendon, ligament, joint capsule, disc, nerve, or all or any of the above. It’s the same reason why back surgery to alleviate “back pain” is almost never successful. There are just too many things that can hurt in the low back...especially nerves! What I recommend Glucosamine Sulfate for is knees, hands, and sometimes feet. These are the joints that have shown to benefit the most from Glucosamine. This includes prevention of arthritis, not just treatment! Abdominal Workshop at “Being Fit” Dr. Hays will be teaching “Optimum Abdominal Training”, a 90 minute workshop at Being Fit Gym in Clairemont Square, on November 6, from 1-2:30pm. This “hands-on” workshop will teach you: + How the wrong exercises can cause back injuries! + How ab training can affect your posture…for better or worse! + Why Side bends can make your love handles worse! + Why leg raises can make your gut look bigger! + Why standard crunches are essentially a “waist” of time! + Which exercises truly give you the most “bang for your buck!” + AND Much More! The class is open to members ($10) and non-members ($15), but space is limited. To reserve your spot, call Being Fit, (858) 483-9294. Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest Our annual Pumpkin Carving Contest will take place from October 27-29. Patients are encouraged to bring in their works of art. Patients will also vote on their favorite, with the winner getting a free Massage! Mark your calendars and bring in your creative jack-o-lanterns for all to see!
