About Our Firm In September of 1981, Neil Shankman opened the first legal clinic in the State of Maine. With offices located in Bangor, Lewiston and South Portland, the firm emphasized the concept of affordability, accessibility, and approachability. We advertised our low hourly rates and prepaid legal services plans. Offices were located in or around major shopping areas. There were extended hours. There was an emphasis on the latest technology, expanded use of Paralegals, and routinization of function so that overall costs were kept to a minimum. The concept was well received by the media and the general public. This was a firm that was dedicated to serving consumers who made too much money to qualify for legal aid, but too little money to afford the highbrow law firms.
