Description

Credit unions are member owned financial cooperatives. They trace their history back to the 1800's in Europe to rural villages wherein residents, unable to obtain loans at reasonable rates or at all, banded together to pool savings to lend to each other. Although a few credit unions were formed in the United States in the early 1900's, the movement did not really get started until the 1930's after Congress passed the 1931 Credit Union Act.To this day, regardless of membership base or size, the core mission of all credit unions is serve the under served. The best way to describe the philosophy of the credit movement is by quoting a statement used by credit unions in their literature throughout the world since the beginnings of the movement: "Not for profit, not for charity, but for service".Membership at Shoreline Credit Union is open to anyone who lives or works in Manitowoc or Kewaunee County as well as their families and retirees.
