By DAVID LISENBY david@silsbeebee.com A call to the Lumberton Police Department reporting suspicious people walking around an apartment complex aided in the arrest of three suspects for auto burglary. On Sept. 15 officer Chad Wilson responded to the call at Timberwood Apartments on Hwy. 96. Upon his arrival he located three individuals, two males and one female, sitting on the steps of an apartment unit. According to Sgt. Kenneth Powell, one of the males identified himself as Jacob Lee Smith and the other identified himself as Nicholas Garvin. While speaking to them, the subject who identified himself as Smith took off running. After he ran, it was discovered that the subject who had ran off was actually James Ryan Davis. After questioning the remaining two subjects about what they were doing in the area, Melancon stated that while they were traveling on Hwy. 96, she and Davis had gotten into an argument. Davis had pulled into McDonald’s and dropped her off in the parking lot and then left. She had noticed that Davis then pulled into the apartment complex. After a while she walked over to the apartments to see what her friends were up to and found them sitting on the steps. She sat down and that was when the officer arrived. “Garvin was so intoxicated that we didn’t really get much out of him that night,” said Powell. “He was placed under arrest for public intoxication and taken to Hardin County jail. Melancon was released after giving her statement.” Shortly thereafter officers began getting reports of burglaries at the apartment complex, items missing out of cars. Officers went back to the apartment complex. The truck that Davis and the others had been in was still at the apartments, so officers looked in it and found items that had been reported missing in the bed of the truck. Several reports were taken that night. Lt. Breaux and Powell, in order to question the subjects further, traveled to Smith Road, north of Silsbee, to locate Kelsey Melancon at the address she had given in her initial statement. When the officers turned onto Smith Road they passed a GMC Jimmy with a white male driver, a white female passenger and a white male passenger in the back seat. “When they saw us they took off at a higher rate of speed,” Powell said. “By the time we got turned around we had no idea where they had gone, so we contacted Silsbee Police Department and issued an attempt to locate on the vehicle.” According to Silsbee Chief Dennis Allen, officer Todd Gillette observed the vehicle at the Zip In convenience store. A white male quickly entered the store followed by a white female. He went into the store and asked the male if he was James Ryan Davis. The male confirmed that he was. Gillette asked Davis to exit the store to speak with him. As Davis was exiting Gillette went to grab his right hand. Davis pulled away and slammed the door into the officer and then took off running. Gillette told him to stop or he would use his taser on him. Davis did not stop so Gillette deployed his taser, stopping the subject, and took him into custody. All three subjects were transported to Silsbee Police Department.
