In 1904 when the Kingsdown® mattress company began making mattresses by hand in Mebane, North Carolina, we used state-of-the-art materials such as corn husks and horsehair insulation—and sold our premium product for $1.35. A century later, these materials have evolved into hypoallergenic padding and the process involves space-age technology. But even with all of the advances in manufacturing techniques, one thing has not changed about the Kingsdown® company: our mattress sets are still handcrafted, often by the descendants of those early pioneers who were the first Kingsdown employees.The fact is, our guiding philosophy has always been the quest for exceptional sleep systems through research and innovation. And nothing that's been invented in the last 100 years can take the place of a skilled and caring craftsman overseeing the construction of each and every mattress that leaves our factory.
