Decor: Real simple --- large space, looooong bar, 4 pool tables, shuffleboard, beer label flags flapping like their Tibetan counterparts. Entertainments: Pool, people-watching. Originally a beer-bottling plant, Frank "Smitty" Smith, a railroad man, took over the property in 1938, adding a Chinese restaurant. Today, sans the chow mein, Smitty's is owned by John Larkin, Carol and Chuck Keller. "From day one, this place has been a bar," says Larkin. "It used to open at six a.m. for World War II shipbuilders." That would be Marinship, the West Coast's largest such operation.
