Description

Smitty's Bar, 214 Caledonia St., Sausalito. (415) 332-2637. Denizens: Marin rats, regular Joes, growing yuppie contingent. Decor: Real simple --- large space, looooong bar, 4 pool tables, shuffleboard, beer label flags flapping like their Tibetan counterparts. Entertainments: Pool, people-watching. Celebrity patrons: Musicians from nearby Record Plant. Jukebox: 3 for $1. Credence, Sinatra, John Mayall. Extras: Salty characters. Jameson's index: $4. Yes, there was a "Smitty." Originally a beer-bottling plant, Frank "Smitty" Smith, a railroad man, took over the property in 1938, adding a Chinese restaurant. Today, sans the chow mein, Smitty's is owned by John Larkin, Carol and Chuck Keller. "From day one, this place has been a bar," says Larkin. "It used to open at six a.m. for World War II shipbuilders." That would be Marinship, the West Coast's largest such operation. Flagging down busy bartenders can be arduous, but compare that to competing for a quitting-time beer against 75,000 shipworkers.
