SNUGTOP, one of the country’s leading manufacturers of fiberglass truck caps and tonneau covers, was founded in 1959 under the name of Custom Hardtops by Robert Kyle. Mr. Kyle, who died in 1985, was a man of great vision for the industry.One should not underestimate the power of a catchy name. Of all the names in the industry SNUGTOP has the most "relevant" name as it appropriately describes all the things this manufacturer is trying to accomplish with its products. Today every-body knows the name and not just on the West Coast.Since its inception, the company has been headquartered in Long Beach, California, always within 2 miles from its current address. In the late 50’s Robert Kyle owned a local auto supply store selling hardtops for European sports cars among other things. When customers’ complaints mounted over the quality of the tops, he decided to get into manufacturing on his own. He called them "SNUG Products by Custom Hardtops". Always looking to expand his business, Kyle manufactured his first fiberglass truck cap in 1965 for the original Datsun mini truck followed by El Camino and Ranchero tops. He would market his products directly to truck dealers since there were hardly any independent truck cap dealers as we know them today.
