Description
The Soap Factory was founded in 1989 by a small group of artists as one of the first venues in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St Paul devoted to emerging visual art. Originally called No Name Gallery, then No Name Exhibitions, our non-profit has, over 25 years, filled a crucial niche in the vital regional arts community by providing a supportive exhibition environment for artists who are at the beginning of their careers or who are exploring new genres of expression.
KFE: As part of FOCO, you presented the film “EPICBITCH” featuring you and Kristin Van Loon. JC: Working with Kristin was a dream come true. She is a dear friend and I have admired her work in HIJACK for a long time – she is one of the best performers I have ever seen. Kristin came to every Outlet performance and asked me to do FOCO at Bryant Lake Bowl. Because of the venue, FOCO gave me the opportunity to include film. “EPICBITCH” was a performance in two parts – the film and a live performance piece. It was the closing piece for the festival.
Artist Jaime Carrera was an important contributor to all three Artery shows at The Soap Factory – Artery 24 in 2008 and 2009, and Artery Twentyten in 2010. He continues to be a prominent creative voice in the Twin Cities as a performance artist, curator, photographer and filmmaker. Carrera revels in the unexpected and the unconventional and prefers to work in a rapid, organic way. I recently sat down with him to talk about just a few of his recent projects. Kristine Frank Elias: Your first work at The Soap Factory was in Artery 24 in 2008 and you went on to perform in all three Artery shows.
Working with Kristin was one of the best things I have done. She is so busy, but I hope we get to work together again. KFE: You also recently produced a film with the band The Funeral and the Twilight. City Pages listed it in the Top 10 Must See Minnesota Music Videos the week on March 20. JC: The band members are good friends of mine and they asked me to make a video to support their new record “Lust”. I would call it an album video and it includes three tracks from the record.
