Located on the eastern end of Bogue Banks, Fort Macon State Park provides public access to some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches on the North Carolina coast. But by far the most fascinating attraction at the park is the Fort itself. Fort Macon was built from 1828 to 1836 by the United States Army. In April 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War, the Fort was seized by North Carolina troops.
