Eric D. Lynch, PhD President & Director Dr. Lynch completed his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, where he mapped the first human gene for hearing loss, DFNA1 with Dr. Mary-Claire King. During his post-doctoral studies at the University of Washington, he cloned DFNA1 and DFNA15. He helped to identify and characterize the first genes for breast cancer (BRCA1) and brain cancer (PTEN). He was a Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Genetics at the UW and served on the 1999 Strategic Planning Committee of the NIH, Division of Deafness and Communication Disorders.
Sound Pharmaceuticals (SPI) is a privately held biopharmaceutical company in Seattle, WA. Estimates from the NIH and the CDC place the total annual costs of hearing loss at approximately $50 billion per year in the U.S. alone. Currently, there are no FDA approved drugs that protect or restore your hearing from noise damage, ototoxic drugs or aging.
Hearing loss due to ototoxic medications is sensorineural and usually presents initially at the high frequencies and subsequently progresses to the lower frequencies. Impaired hearing as a result of ototoxicity can be temporary, but usually is permanent. The incidence of cisplatin or carboplatin-induced hearing loss ranges up to 62% in early clinical reports and as high as 84-100% in pediatric patients. Clinical symptoms of ototoxicity are associated with hearing loss, tinnitus, and difficulty understanding speech.
