Description
South Side Cemetery was established in September of 1873. We have the former Mayor Armstrong buried here, along with many local business people, one such family being the Sankey family, who owned a brick company in Pittsburgh that grew into a large, profitable business. We have over 40,000 people buried here, and soon to be 41, 000. We have three pet sections, with two already completely filled, and the third close to. We have a Heritage flower program here that is very popular. We are sixty-three acres of beautiful, well-kept grounds, and our staff here takes great pride in the appearance of the grounds, as well as in the relationships with our families. Oftentimes, family members who have loved ones buried here stop in the office just to say hello, and tell us how impressed they are with the grounds. We host an annual Memorial Day program, in collaboration with the local Veterans organizations, to pay tribute to the many veterans buried here. We have the biggest veterans section of any other cemetery in our area of Pittsburgh. We also work closely with the local Boy Scout troop on Memorial Day Weekend, placing flags on graves of all of our fallen heroes. We consider every veteran buried here a hero in his or her own right. Every year it seems there are more and more people that come to attend the program. We are a staff, and cemetery, that values our connections to the community, and to the families who have lost people that they care about.
