For The Most Part, A Man Tries To Please His Wife, Sometimes To The Point Of Not Thinking About The Consequences. Joyce asked for an "Old Junker Jeep". I think to myself, "self, you ought to go out and find her an old Jeep if that is what she wants, besides, an old Jeep can't cost that much". Ok, so I find her a Jeep on the side of the road. It looks old, can't be worth much. It wasn't as old as it looked, it was a 79 CJ5, and it was worth more than I'd expected but still something that I could afford so I brought it home and handed her the keys. She was just as happy as could be but there were a couple of things that she wanted fixed before she felt comfortable driving her new toy. So, the same day I take it to the muffler shop and have a new muffler and tail pipe installed, even put a chrome tip on the tail pipe to jazz it up a little. While it was up on the rack, I got a chance to really inspect the bottom side. This was rather enlightening. Got an axle seal on the right rear side leaking, two bad u-joints, a drive shaft slip joint that is about to fall off and I can now see where the 1/8 turn of slack in the steering is coming from. First thing I'm going to need is some tools to work with, all of mine have managed to get scattered, lost or borrowed so the next day I go to Sears and buy $400.00 worth of tools, bring them home and set in to fix that axle seal. Before I can get the first nut off I have to go to my brothers and borrow a wrench. Making a long story short, my puller would not loosen the wheel flange and I had to re-install the wheel and take the jeep to a local shop and pay to have someone else do it. Since I'm paying someone else anyway, may as well do it right so we just replaced all four axle seals (two on each axle) and both axle bearings. In the process of removing the axles, the mechanic discovered that the left rear wheel was not the right size and needed replaced. Well, we can't have one odd ball wheel on Joyce's new toy so I ordered new polished aluminum wheels all around. Of course it would be senseless to put those old "dry rotted" tires on these new rims, one of them didn't match anyway, so I ordered new tires all around as well. As it stand right now I've got to replace those u-joints and fix the steering, oh, and it doesn't have turn signals, got to get those working and then she can drive her new toy that I thought I could afford. Next thing you know she'll want the darn thing painted! Pictures will be added as I progress. Wheels & Tires Ordered the wheels and tires, in the mean time I took the jeep back home. Have you ever bought a defective case of oil? While I was waiting for the wheels and tires to come in I decided to change the oil in the Jeep and my riding mower, about time to start cutting the grass. With a new case of oil and filters in hand I first change the oil in the Jeep, all goes well. Started it up, it built oil pressure and I turned the switch off and went to the lawn mower. Again, all went well, I started the mower to let it warm up. I put it in gear and something locked up on the drive line and smoked then broke the drive belt.
