Span and many of our key suppliers are members of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), and we are able to assist owners in gaining LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) certification. We believe in these organizations’ principles not only because they make good environmental sense, but in many cases, good long-term economic sense as well. Much of our construction is done with steel – a highly recycled commodity, produced using high- efficiency mini-mills in close proximity to our projects. This not only requires less energy, but less transportation, for reduced carbon footprinting. We save significant amounts of steel by working with our metal building suppliers to custom-engineer primary structural sections for our projects. For each project, we propose a variety of solutions that allow the project team to evaluate capital, maintenance and operating costs for both the building envelope and the heating, cooling and lighting systems. These solutions may range from increased insulation to a “Cool Roof” system to low emissivity blankets, in order to maximize efficiency and minimize operating costs.
