"Where there's moisture, there are herbivores," said Jeff Roberts, a burly man with blue eyes. Roberts owns Specific Products of San Pedro, a company that traps gophers and develops products for gopher-catching and other industries. From the palatial back yards on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to school yards across the South Bay, gophers make their own business. Although they may be cute in a chubby-cheeked way, gophers with the munchies can seriously damage a well-manicured lawn or garden. Gnawing at roots and pulling plants cartoon-style into their dens, a gopher or two can destroy a yard or pass on parasites to people. Roberts, 34, is one man trying to stop the invasion. And he does it the old-fashioned way - with traps. His methods are totally safe for the environment, Roberts said, folding his rough, callused hands together. He makes all of his traps and tunes them up so they snap at the perfect moment.
