Welcome one and all (09/11/10) It's Saturday, Sept. 11, and I would like to thank everyone for coming. Who would ever have expected that all of you folks would turn out for my wife and my 21st anniversary. I'm overwhelmed...what, you're not here to celebrate with us? Well what are all you people doing here in our fine town?... Happily bucking the trend (09/07/10) For 160 years, the Michigan State Fair was a nod to agriculture in a city known more for motors than milk cows. The nation's oldest state fair, with its home in suburban Detroit, was traditionally held the week prior to Labor Day. This year, however, the gates were locked. The midway home to asphalt, not ferris wheels... Movie messages (09/04/10) I've spent the better part of the summer attending either one or two movies a week in order to provide reviews for the entertainment page. I thank the good folks at Southpark 7 for allowing me the opportunity to come in on a weekly basis to review the hot new releases on the big screen... King's dream not fully realized (08/31/10) "I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice." -Martin Luther King Jr. -August 28, 1963 I've reached an age where I thought I'd seen and heard it all... Losing a member of the family (08/24/10) We spend a lot of our lives at work. If we're lucky, we work with people we get along with. We can laugh, share a joke, help each other. If we're blessed, we work with people who become family. I've been blessed. And, this week I have to say goodbye to a very important member of my work family... Free education? (08/21/10) I remember hearing it somewhere. What's that term again, oh yes, "free education." Anyone can get a public education because it's free. Really, because I just spent close to $90 at one of our fine local retailers picking up a few of those last minute mandated items for that free education... Important lessons are learned young (08/17/10) While it's hard to believe, school doors swing open this week, and our children head back for another year of learning. The beginning of the school year is always a melancholy time for me. It marks the passage of time even more than the clock moving from one year to another on New Year's Eve... D stands for deficient (08/14/10) Give me a "D." You say, "D." Give me a..."What comes next?" That's the question that many students with D grade averages ask themselves when they wrap up high school - what comes next? I was listening to some talk radio the other day - a shocker I know - when I heard an interesting perspective from someone in the educational field... No complaining (no matter how tough it is) about the heat (08/10/10) I must admit, the hot and sticky weather we're in has been testing my vow, made in the midst of last winter's cold and snow, to never, EVER complain about how hot it is. I may whine a bit, but I'm not really complaining. After all, we've got air-conditioning to escape to when the temperatures soar and the humidity climbs toward the 80 percent mark...
