Description
Daily Bread is a rapidly growing company that sells food storage products throughout the United States through a team of direct sales agents. In addition to great products, customers enjoy the flexibility of multiple shipment and payment schedules. Daily Bread takes the guesswork out of food storage preparation. Customers can relax knowing that they are prepared for whatever comes their way. For decades, government and religious organizations have urged people to prepare themselves by storing extra food and water. In light of recent disasters and unsettled economic times, it's becoming easy to see the importance of doing so. Without warning, each of us may face the need for food storage items. While Daily Bread cannot control when unexpected events may happen, Daily Bread can prepare their customers to weather the storm. Daily Bread sells home food storage products to customers throughout the United States. The sales force consists of hundreds of temporary employees that sell door-to-door through the summer season. Most of the sales force then leaves to pursue school or other commitments during the off season. Commissions are paid based on a multi-tier plan with managers receiving over-ride commissions from the sales tiers below them. Although commissions are generally tied to customer payment schedules, flexibility is important since the sales force turnover is high and outstanding commissions are paid when sales representatives leave the company. The company makes their products affordable by offering a variety of shipment plans with corresponding payment schedules. For example, one order may consist of many shipments over multiple years with payment schedules tied to these orders. This flexibility adds significant operational complexity. Before Spring2 Technologies was hired to develop a comprehensive solution, Daily Bread was using a spreadsheet and paper based folder systems to process and track orders, shipments, and customer payments. Because of rapid growth, significant human resources were needed to receive faxes, open mail, manually enter credit cards, manage shipment schedules, and match customer invoices with the proper shipments. Inefficiencies were found throughout the process including lost orders, late fulfillment, and payment reconciliation. Additionally shipping times often took weeks. On the sales side, commission processing was also inefficient and based on spreadsheets and manual processes. Time and resources were required to track the multi-tiered plan. As the company grew, inventory tracking became increasingly complex. The company was using an entry level accounting product that lacked the sophistication needed to manage the dynamics of a quickly scaling entity. In light of these challenges, Daily Bread engaged Spring2 Technologies to help architect a systems infrastructure that could standardize, automate, and streamline operations in order to insure company scalability.
