Description

Natural stone selection involves considerations that go beyond color and texture. Some stones perform poorly in freezing climates because they absorb water and crack when it freezes. Others stain easily under acidic conditions. Some are sufficiently soft that they wear visibly over time in high traffic applications. Limestone, particularly the Indiana variety, performs well in central Illinois exposures and remains stable across decades of weather. Granite is harder and even more durable but costs significantly more and is heavier to handle. Sandstone offers warm color tones but varies considerably in weather resistance depending on the specific quarry source. Fieldstone collected locally has obvious appeal for rustic projects but should be checked for soundness before use in any structural application. Springfield, Chatham, and rural Sangamon County properties using natural stone benefit from masons who know which stones perform where, rather than treating all natural stone as equivalent. Discussing stone selection with the mason during the design phase produces better matches between material and application than working from photographs alone.
