Description

The General Baptist State Convention was organized October 17, 1867 at the First African Baptist Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina. It was originally formed “to support the Gospel ministry and to promote missions.” The GBSC has stood strong for over 135 years. The Convention now has a membership of over 600,000 black Baptists. GBSC is headquartered on Wilmington Street in Raleigh, North Carolina. It has five auxiliaries: the Woman’s Baptist Home and Foreign Missionary Convention, Congress of Christian Education, Ushers Convention, Laymen League and Minister’s Council. The Woman’s Baptist Home and Foreign Missionary Convention is unique in that it maintains separate offices at the Baptist Headquarters in Raleigh and it employs an Executive Secretary-Treasurer. The Woman’s Convention was organized in 1884.
