Chiropractic was established in 1895, and is based on the function of the nervous system. The nervous system allows us to perceive the world and interact with it. It is the reason we feel touch and pain. Though pain is an uncomfortable sensation, it is meant to prevent further injury. Chiropractors use their understanding of the body to determine which tissue is injured so you can heal quickly and properly. Pain is a good indication that you should visit your chiropractor, but remember that there are a lot of disease processes where you may not notice anything is wrong (ex. high blood pressure, cancer). Always remember that pain is like a warning signal. If the oil light in your car comes on, it is warning you that there is a problem. The problem is what CAUSES the light to go on. In your body, pain is not the problem; it is simply telling you that an injury has occurred in the tissue. Taking a pain reliever may block the pain, but it does not solve the problem. Chiropractors are advocates for prevention and maintenance, as well as solving the problem rather than masking it. Come in at the first sign of pain, so we can determine the CAUSE of your discomfort instead of covering up the symptoms.
