What to Know Before You Get Waxed What is waxing? Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal process by which a depilatory (wax) is applied to the skin then pulled off in a quick movement to remove unwanted hair at the root. What are the benefits of waxing? - Effective removal of large amounts of hair at one time - Longer lasting results than epilary hair removal methods (e.g. shaving); hair begins to grow back in two to six weeks after waxing - Areas that are consistently waxed over a long period of time exhibit diminished hair regrowth that is softer and lighter than the original hair - It is less expensive per treatment than laser hair removal or electrolysis What are the drawbacks to waxing? - There can be short-lasting discomfort during the process of removing the wax from the skin - Some individuals may experience ingrown hairs, red bumps, and "pinprick" bleeding in the waxed area - It is not a permanent method of hair removal Fortunately, these drawbacks can be minimized by the skill and technique of the esthetician who performs the waxing procedure, in addition to correctly following proper post-waxing care instructions. What are the contraindications to waxing? Sweet Cheeks Boutique strives to minimize the discomfort and potential injury related to waxing. As a general guideline, we recommend you NOT have a waxing procedure performed if you have: - Used Accutane within the six months - Used a topical acne prescription within the last three days on the area you want waxed (e.g. Tazarac, Differin, Tetracycline) - A sunburn in the area to be waxed - Active herpes lesions (cold sores, canker sores, or fever blisters) in the area to be waxed - Severe acne in the area to be waxed - Had a light chemical peel within the last seven to ten days - Had Botox injections within the last 24 hours - Had dermal-filler injections within the last seven days Be sure to inform your esthetician if you use exfoliants, alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids, retinols, hydroquinone, or other epidermis-thinning skin-care products, as these can make your skin more susceptible to tearing or lifting during the waxing procedure. Also let us know if you are taking oral antibiotics, as these medications can make your skin more sensitive to waxing. Women may experience extra sensitivity to waxing up to a week prior to the beginning of their menses and during pregnancy. Check with your doctor before getting waxed if you had laser skin resurfacing, cosmetic or reconstructive surgery, or physician-administered chemical peel within the last year on the area you wish to have waxed.
