Description

Robert Talbott Vineyards is the story of one family's commitment to strict standards of excellence, belief in the value of hard work, recognition of the wisdom of simplicity, and devotion to the family as life's center. Robert Talbott Sr., his wife Audrey, and their son Robb (Robert S. Talbott) moved to Carmel, California, in 1950 where they started a tie company. Audrey sewed the ties by hand and Robert Sr. sold them up and down the California coast out of his station wagon. They worked very hard and were rewarded with success. The Talbotts became interested in fine wines when they visited French and Italian vineyards during buying trips to Europe for their growing tie business. Wine was an important part of the Talbott family's lifestyle. The family ate dinner together every night and wine was always part of the evening meal. When traveling, they drank the local wines from the wine-producing areas they visited, enjoying a simple vin de pays with rustic regional cuisine as they would, occasionally, savor a Grand Cru Burgundy with haute cuisine. As the Robert Talbott Studio grew to be internationally acclaimed as a leader in the luxury tie and clothing business, the family's interest in someday producing exceptional Chardonnay became profound. The simple truths the family had learned about wine and winemaking in Europe were in conflict with the general standards of the California wine industry in the late 70s and early 80s. California winemakers, strongly influenced by the teachings at the University of California - Davis, tended to practice a very clean, controlled style of winemaking. The Talbotts believed that to produce the quality and style of wine to which they aspired required traditional, age-old Burgundian techniques, including barrel fermentation, minimal or no filtering and fining, and very gentle handling. They believed that if you perfectly matched the grape variety, clone, climate and soil when establishing vineyards and then treated the resulting fruit naturally and gently, great wine would result.
