About Us College students Chris Roof and Brad Brooks, lived in neighboring towns in Northwestern Ohio and after attending Hocking Tech for several years, the young men began carpooling back and forth to school in order to save money. Over the years, a strong friendship was formed and when the duo graduated in 1985, they both took jobs at a med-sized tree service in Toledo, Ohio. According to Roof, the one hour and ten-minute commute was exhausting, inspiring the new graduates to consider another career option, starting a business of their own. "In 1987, we each went to separate banks and borrowed a total of $16,000 which we used to buy a tree service truck and a new chipper," said Roof. "Several years later, we started hiring workers to help with various jobs and by 1992: the EPA was implementing a lot of new green waste rules that led us to diversify our business." The motivated business partners began traveling to various cities and municipalities within a 100 mile radius, asking if their company, Tawa Tree Service, Inc., could grind waste material to assist in EPA regulatory compliance. It wasn't long before Tawa had enough business lined up to begin processing green waste at area landfills. As Roof focused on building the land-clearing division, Brooks continued to build Tawa's tree service business, gradually growing the group to incorporate three full-time crews and a slew of equipment, including an Altech 60/70 bucket truck which was purchased just last year. In order to create a distinction between Tawa and competitors' businesses, Brooks branched out into specialty tree care services. During the late 1990's he became a certified arborist and began offering microinjection for the company's growing list of customers. The division also began strictly following ISA pruning standards, presenting Tawa's skilled workers as top-quality tree specialists. Like the company's tree service, Tawa's land-clearing division has also grown by leaps and bounds as Roof expanded its market to cover locations as far south as Kentucky and upward to mid-state Michigan. One of the company's major equipment upgrades took place in 1998 when Tawa was hired by a large Midwest supermarket chain, Meijer, Incorporated, to clear a property in Jeffersonville, IN, directly across the river from Louisville, KY. While the company's land-clearing division is hard at work on such high-profile projects, much of the green waste produced by the company is processed and turned into colored mulch at Tawa headquarters in Ottawa, OH. With such a wide array of business divisions to its name, Tawa has a presence throughout Ohio and into several surrounding states. And, with Roof and Brooks at the helm, the company will likely continue to grow each year as new opportunities arise and as new forestry equipment is introduced to the market.
