Chelsea has been dedicated to creating designs specifically for mission-driven companies for over 10 years. She believes design has the power to raise consciousness, educate, and make changes in our society. And she became a designer to do just that. She sits on the board of On The Ground , a non-profit bringing water, education, and healthcare to fair trade communities around the world. Chelsea has also met with farmers and activists on Fair Trade delegations to East Timor, Palestine, Ethiopia and Mexico. She frequently offers her creative services to support small businesses in the thriving local and sustainable economy in her current and home town of Traverse City, Michigan and beyond. The Heartsong Pepper Brews and Heartsong Chai represent an extremely rare category of product, namely natural beverages made on a local level with a community consciounsess. Heartsong, based in Rogue Valley, Oregon was founded to provide right livelihoods for employees and a healthy, ethically-sourced alternative to corporate beverages. As owners, Elizabeth Bretco and Chad Derosier, put it, their goal is "to revitalize people, while revitalizing business as an ecologically responsible and respectable part of community." They produce and serve their products in a warm, welcoming atmosphere created in a former Pizza Hut. Their spices are ground by bicycle power. And their biggest marketing activity is serving their tea for free from their "tea temple" at Burning Man. The Change collaborated with Heartsong to design their Pepper Brew logo, refine the Heartsong logo, to design their bottle labels and tea boxes, along with POS materials.
When they couldn't find organic, healthy, ethical products for their baby, Leah and Zack Carter started making their own and Better For Babies was born. They company's cloth diapers and other baby accessories are all organic and Fair Trade. The Change has worked with Leah and Zack to refine the company's logo and develop core messaging and a tag line. As well, we've design and write their press materials, hang tags, and product packaging. Currently, we are proud to be collaborating with the couple on the development of a new brand, Better For Grown-ups, dedicated to offering high-quality reusable alternatives to disposable personal care products.
Sometimes dubbed “bleeding heart conservatives”, Self Help works with those left outside of the economic mainstream — women, rural communities, people of color — to develop innovative solutions for economic sustainability. They fight predatory lending, they advise policy makers, and they make business and home loans to people under-served by conventional banks. The Change is working with Self Help to create branding and communications for a broad range of the organizations’ services, from credit union savings accounts to their lending programs. By working with Self-Help, we’ve learned how critical access to financial tools is effecting change, particularly in terms of diminishing economic disparities.
Nativa is a sister company to another Change accomplice, South Cone, which is one of the leading manufacturers of sustainably crafted furniture.
