Description
THE CRÊPEVINE STORY began in the summer of 2004, when a friend had the idea of opening a crêpe restaurant in Tallahassee. He’d just returned from six weeks in the Greek islands, where he tried his first crêpe, and was excited about introducing this foreign food to his friends at Florida State University. This wasn’t the first time I’d heard someone wanting to open a restaurant, so I didn’t take him too seriously. However, I continued to listen to him rant about his crêpes over the following months, and helped toss around ideas for crêpe recipes. The idea finally came to fruition in March, 2005. The recipes he’s been tinkering with on a cast iron griddle in a small fraternity kitchen were finally tested. They were truly something else. To this day, I’m still not sure if I was excited because I was happy for him, or because I’d tasted heaven in a crêpe. A fraternity house meal plan followed, and I smiled as hungry brothers waited in line for dinner outside the “crêpe room.” After its initial, quiet success , he chose a location and began renovations. We all pitched in. We painted, swept, nailed, and did whatever else needed doing to help our brother realize his dream. Before we knew it, we were being served draft beer and crêpes on The Crêpevine’s opening day: June 9, 2006, the very same day of the first World Cup game. Friends joined in the celebration — and that very same spirit of camaraderie is what continues bringing me back each week (trust me, the crêpes have something to do with it too). The vision for the Crêpevine from the beginning was to have a place where all are welcome to enjoy simple, fresh food; where one can sit down and enjoy a friendly atmosphere filled with the delicious smells of just-made crêpes and freshly chopped vegetables; where there are no closed doors or walls. The ingredients are laid out right in front of you — so that you see your order as it’s prepared; where the employees are as happy as the customers, and the teamwork behind your meal is as essential as the recipes themselves. It has become a refreshing change to the usual hustle and bustle of fast food — a delicious, healthy way to eat on the run, or to simply sit and chat with a friend over a drink or two. It has become a landmark in Tallahassee where students bring their parents and friends from out of town to celebrate what we all love: comfort, friends, and good food. To this day when I walk through the doors of the Crêpevine, it’s like I’m walking into the crêpe room (only it’s a lot nicer), where a young man, a small kitchen, and his freshly made crêpes attracted hungry brothers from every corner of the house. It’s pretty special to see this dream realized through a lot of teamwork and effort. Which is why I’m proud to say congratulations to The Crêpevine’s — for all its past, present, and future successes. And for you, dear readers, I wish you many happy days of good friends and good eating.
