Description

History The Pathfinder, Incorporated was formed in the city of Huntsville, Alabama on March 12, 1976. The idea grew in the early 1970's from the minds of individuals who recognized the city's need for a rehabilitative residence for men who sincerely desired sobriety. That requirement of "sincere desire" for recovery continues as our number one requirement for admission. The board of directors of The Pathfinder, Incorporated purchased an old mill house at 3104 Ivy Avenue, Huntsville, AL. on September 1, 1976. Just seven days later the first client moved in. On May 17, 1977 the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (DMH/MR) certified The Pathfinder as a substance abuse provider. On July 9, 1977 the Huntsville Jaycees received a first place national award for The Pathfinder as their alcohol and drug abuse project. Since achieving certification in 1976, The Pathfinder program has maintained continuous certification by DMH/MR. The Pathfinder strives to meet the current standards and guidelines as implemented by the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (DMH/MR), Substance Abuse Division as a substance abuse provider. The Pathfinder became a United Way of Madison County affiliated agency in 1978 and has a continuous relationship with them until this day. In 1995, The Pathfinder, Incorporated opened Stepping Stones, which was a six bed facility for chemically dependent women. In August of 2000, Stepping Stones was awarded certification by DMH/MR. Much of our present accountability standards have evolved from our relationship with the United Way and with DMH/MR. The Pathfinder has also benefited from the guidance and support we receive from the Community Development Division of the City of Huntsville. Our goal is to continue strengthening The Pathfinder's mission and improving our services by hiring qualified professional staff, recruiting a dedicated Board of Directors, and utilizing a strong volunteer base including former clients and the alumni association.
