Jim Foster is the founder and first commissioner of the Arena Football League. Foster derived the basic concept of Arena football while watching a game of indoor soccer being played at Madison Square Garden on February 11, 1981. He drew it out on a manila folder. The league was shelved due to the USFL, and It wasn't until 1986 when an exhibition game was played in Rockford, IL where the Miami Vice defeated the Chicago Politicians 30-18. In 1987, the AFL was formed with four teams playing... The Chicago Bruisers, Denver Dynamite, Pittsburgh Gladiators, and Washington Commandos... Denver defeated Pittsburgh 45-16 in Arena Bowl I ... the rest is history.
